Creepy Sleepy Show 142 - Sudan Stories
From meeting in a jet-lagged daze in Zurich, UN compounds in Juba, to flying on an old cargo plane and (almost) killing Donkey on the Darfur border, to starvation and genocide, Justin Hartmann and Dan Patterson talk about their recent expedition to South Sudan. With original field recordings of local music, Justin and Dan share some of the intense and funny experiences from the trip.

Creepy Sleepy Show 141 - Live From Sudan
Creepy Sleepy Show 141 - Live From South Sudan

For three weeks in March, 2008 I traveled to Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. In my role as correspondent for the Talk Radio News Service, I accompanied talk radio show hosts from around the United States to the Darfur region of Sudan.
This show, though long, is the real-time recordings of the journey from Switzerland to the Darfur region of South Sudan.

The music on this episode is all original, live field recordings. Our first night in Sudan, we heard chanting and drumming from the darkness of the bush. Around a hut were several people singing, chanting and dancing.

The trip was lead by John Eibner and Gunnar Wiebalck of Christian Solidarity International. Gunnar and John are two of the most honest, self-less men I’ve ever met. If you want to personally help improve the lives of the people of South Sudan, I suggest making a donation to CSI. Their work directly helps people.
I was accompanied on the trip by radio hosts Thom Hartmann, Rusty Humphries, Joe Madison, Ellen Ratner, and Jack Rice. Through this episode, you hear their voices as well as mine.
This episode covers several intense experiences through Sudan, including the moment just after 100 South Sudanese men and women were freed from slavery.

The audio from this episode was edited by William ‘Doc’ Stodden. Thank thank him greatly for both working hard on this, and for allowing me to step back and away from this project. His edit brings a fresh, outside perspective to the South Sudan / Darfur experience.
Thanks.

These are the various ’stand-up’ reports that I recorded while traveling over the past three weeks. I’m not accustomed to recording video, and consider these practice for future social media journalism initiatives (namely the eletion and up-coming Conventions). However, after editing out the dregs, and uploading media over the weekend, it occured to me that there’s a bit of a narriative to the
I don’t claim that these the same as traditional TV reports - all were recorded on the fly, all were recorded in various extreme situations on very little sleep. All, however, do tell the story of a place or event. Together, they tell a story of opulence vs. poverty, war and stability, money and oppression, freedom and parinoia. These reports might be a bit rough, but they’re all honest and they’re all real.

Sudan Pictures
Hey all - Dan here. I’m in Paris fighting off jet lag. I’ve been from Zurich, to Nairobi, to Sudan, to Dubai, to Paris. I got to Geneva on Monday, but I wanted to get some pictures onto my Flickr account. More to come, but here are some pictures from the Sudan trip. It’ll take me some time to title and tag each picture, but these will give you a sense of the region and people.
These people were kidnapped at a young age, beaten and tortured by their Northern masters. They were purchased by Christian Solidarity International for cow vaccine. Others were purchased for 2 donkeys each - about a $30 value.

These women were beaten, raped, and tortured by their masters from the North. They were purchased by Christian Solidarity International, freed, and given supplies.

Giving the news report on Christian Solidarity International’s freeing of 100 slaves in South Sudan / Darfur - the audio report can be found here.

South Sudan children giving a ‘thumbs up!’

The AK-47 is ubiquitous in South Sudan - this is in the Returnee Camp of Majang Kar - 40k people and 1 water well.

This is Quant, a South Sudan boy about 10 years old. The injury on his leg is an ulcer that, if left untreated, will eventually rot the bone, cause infection, and kill him. He will be treated by Christian Solidarity International, but there are too many people like Quant who will not be treated. The white on the leg is chalk that the people use to treat wounds.

Videos from Sudan and Dubai
Daniel Andrlik here again, with more media updates from DHP. He has been able to upload a significant amount of media of his trip since he arrived in Dubai, although he hasn’t had a chance to provide detailed descriptions for each video, and rather than attempting to do so myself, I will just include them all here. Unfortunately, I’m not entirely sure that I’m posting these in the correct order, but it’s important enough that they be seen that I will go ahead anyway. They can also be accessed at http://creepysleepy.blip.tv.
Also, you can see some photos as well as commentary from DHP’s colleagues at Talk Radio News. DHP also has photos from the trip on his Flickr.

On the last day in Sudan, I hung with a few guys listening to some crazy Sudanese ‘pop’ music - the guy on the passenger side was rapping the beat on his AK-47 - really strange image.

Sudan - Freeing of Slaves
Daniel Andrlik here again, passing along an update from DHP.
DHP calls in with an incredible story of a trip to the desert in which he witnessed the freeing of over 100 slaves. What is most unbelievable is how this came about, and how little it took to purchase their freedom after years of abuse.
