Creepy Sleepy Show 138 - Social Media and Politics
In summer 2005 I was working as a jock on rock radio in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. During a particularly dull afternoon drive, I remember reading about Ana Marie Cox blogging from the previous year’s Democratic National Convention. She was a ‘new media’ content producer invading the comfort zone of the so-called Old Media and it was great. Blogging had been around for years, but for the first time it was influencing and participating in the discussion.
It’s 2008 and ‘blogging’ has become ’social media’ - hyperactive, relentless, inescapable. It’s impact and influence on politics, culture, campaigning, and media is undeniable.
What is this social media shit? What does it do? Why does it matter? Who cares?
A few weeks ago I DMed some social media people and asked them to contribute to a dialog on how the ‘new media’ is influencing the old.
The Social Media and Politics Panel Is:
- C.C. Chapman
- Chris Penn
- Whitney Hoffman
With some careful calendar management, we’ll all try to convene from time to time during this gross and wonderful campaign cycle to discuss the State of the (social media) Union.
A few notes about the audio:
1.) I’m a slow learner. I know Macs are supposed to be better at media creation and editing, but I lean so heavily on efficient .wav editing programs (read: Audition is my crutch) that recording vox on my newish MacBook Pro is challenging. Lame, I know.
2.) Chris Penn is Darth Vader. Not on purpose. We blame Skype and OS X.5
3.) Whitney kicks ass and recorded this - my Skpe/Audio Hijack Pro kept crashing. Lame, I know.
Thanks!
