Creepy Sleepy and Talk Radio News’ intrepid journalists Wendy Wang and David Popp were both in New Hampshire this week attending the Republican debates, as sponsored by Fox sNews. We discussed the various Republican ‘platforms,’ policy issues, blah blah boring boring shit blah. This current crop of Republicans makes evil really, really boring. However, David Popp did compare Reggie Bush to Sean Hannity (okay, Wendy put that comparison in Popp’s mouth), so that was pretty cool.
Wang did, however, send live updates of the debate to us via her Crackberry. It was fairly thrilling. I’m trying to get her to use Twitter, but for now, check her Cracktastic coverage:
The evening starts off with a jab at Fred Thompson. Ron
Paul, the anti-war candidate welcomes his presence. McCain says
Thompson should get into the ring because its going to be fun. Romney
says he’ll bring in new idea, but also critical of his decision to not
be here.
Romney was asked how he could combat illegal
immigration, find illegals when he can’t even find the illegals on his
front lawn. Romney sticks to amnesty is not the anwer.
Guliani’s
previous statement, pro-illegal immigration was asked. Guliani states
that he’s not against reporting of illegals to the police. He says his
strategy was to combat crime and allow illegals to report crime and
help legals.
McCain answers the illegal immigration by saying
amnesty is not the answer. Why current policy push failed is due to
current failing policies. Says he can secure the borders. Says Romney
did have the same ideas.
Huckabee is asked about the issue of
racism and illegal immigrations. He says the people aren’t angry at
immgrants, they’re angry at the broken border. Says we should
outsource to UPS/FedEx as they have better tracking system. Says he’s
not angry at immigrants.
Tancredo of course is asked this next.
The one issue candidate says this is the most important issue. Says the
rest of the candidates were silent for a long time, and had their
fingers in the wind. Says its got nothing to do with disliking anyone
but its about the rule of law.
Hunter answers to his idea of a
fence. He says he built the double fence in San Diego that is
effectively keeping people out and the fence is now law.
Guliani and McCain is asked of ICE issue. Guliani Says
reality is physical fence won’t solve it, but need a technological
fence, and need I’d card. Want to encourage legal immigrations.
McCain
says amnesty is “forgiveness” but the proposed reform will impose fines
and penalties. Mentioned he was in Bagdad over July 4th and that
soldiers were green card holders fighting there.
Romney says the
bill is amnesty. Fence is broken. Need to end sancuary city and stop
funding. Need to sanction employers. That will end amnesty.
Brownback is asked about Larry Craig, says he needs to
stick with decision to resign. Bgger picture that the party needs to
stand for family values.
Should be bolder.
Hunter is asked
should Craig resign immidiately. Affirmative from Hunter. Says when
people in their party has “problems” like this they leave, Dems make
them chairman of a committee (??). What the fuck is this ashole talking
about?
Romney wants to see Roe over turned. Want to see a
nation with no abortion, in the meantime states ought to decide. Must
respect the sancitity of both mother and child.
Huckabee is all about life at conception.
I
love it when men discuss my uterus and what I ought to do with my body.
Oh yes they value life of the unborn but not the living.
Guliani is asked about his anti-gun stance but he
defends his effective anti-crime control. He says states have states
have the right to decide allowing students carry guns. Focus should be
on criminals.
Paul; said 9/11 attackers would have thought twice
if passengers had guns. Paul corrects question, says he wants airlines
to have responsibility to protect not the federal government. Private
industry protects its own infrastructure.
Constitutional amendment on gay marriage. Live free or die state says no way.
Romney
says there ought to be a constitutional ban. He’s cheered and boo’ed.
Says those who redefined marriage sees family structures falling apart.
More kids born out of wedlock. Marriage rates are down.
McCain answers a question about his criticsm of Guliani
for lack of experience. He’s talking about his record and experience in
security.
Guliani is asked if he’s going to Iraq. Says he has
respect for McCain. Says he’s not running on what he did on 9/11, but
rather on what he did in NYC and how he’s able to turn NYC over.
Executive experience touted.
Asking Romney on his committment in Iraq. Rom says
surge is working evidence points and therefore will be able to drawdown
troops.
I’m loosing steam now.
McCain says the surge is
working, not probably working he says the debate will be if we
withdraw or surrender. Reiterates how the surge is working. Says he
shares the anger and frustration of NH.
Paul is up. He’s asked
what about protecting the Iraqis given his anti-war stance. He says the
same people who says the bloodbath with premature withdraw are the same
one who argued for a war in the first place. Says there is no need for
our presence in peninsula and threatening Iran. We’re undermining
natuonal security. I’m liking him!!!
Moderator my ass!! This chump is totally biased.
I’m not even going to note what Brownback is saying. Wants separate states but one country
Some
guy, old guy outside here is being lead away by police. He’s wearing
seersucker and wearing a cowboy hat. Two policemen just cuffed him and
took him away. No idea why yet.
Huckbee says we broke Iraq and
we need to fix it. Says McCain understands the word honor. Says he
supports McCain’s stance and needs to bring troops home with honor.
Paul responds that mistake needs to make correction and not continue
going down the wrong policy. Can’t continue to loose election? Huckbee
says we should not care about winning elections. Paul says we are
loosing lives too.
Hunter injects his opinion. Somethin’ somethin’ somthin’. The crowd is cheering at just about everything.
Tancredo responds to his anti-surge stance. He
highlights why we’re at war and the enemy is radical Islam. Good save.
Says we can’t leave because war won’t end with our withdrawal. We
weren’t attacked in the first place because we were there. Actually I
disagree.
At the cafe and viewer response people feel candidates
are dodging question. Questioner wants a response from Romney. And
tells him how offended he is that Romney compared his son’s campaign
efforts for him to sons and daughters fighting in the war.
Romney
says of course that there is no comparison. He didn’t apologize again
for that statement. Says again thing “look” successful. Romney says
he’s going to wait for the report from Petraus before making
affirmative statements.
The question now is on presidential power. Romney says
the focus should be on preventing terrorist attacks. Needs to track and
follow and needs to wiretap mosque and church. Says the most important
civil liberty is the right to be kept alive.
Tancredo is asked
iftheres a line he won’t cross, including torture. Tank says how do we
define torture. In a word, he believe in torture to get intel in the
name of national security.
McCain is asked to respond to Tancredo. McCain says intel obtained can never
counterbalance
our reputation and using it as an excuse to torture our people. He
says those who support torture usually don’t have military experience.
Guliani says we can close Gitmo becuase no one else wants these people.
Says war is never won with talks of time table. Need to set objective in order to win.
Hunter
is given same question on Gitmo. He might as well just throw in the
towel. Dude’s got no steam. Just reiterating what the other guys says.
Hunter is talking about how the prisioners in Gitmo is being treated
better than most Americans.
Next question is on tax reform. Asking McCain won’t
pledge not to raise taxes. McCain points to his record of not raising
taxes. He says we need to stop letting spending get out of control.
McCain points to law makers in prision now on corruption charges.
McCain says he doesn’t need to sign pledges.
Brownback is asked
to respond. He says McCain should sign. He says we are taxed too much.
Need to grow economy. Why aren’t they discussing outsourcing?
Guliani
called to task on raising tax in NYC. Also he didn’t sign pledge.
Guliani says as president take pne pledge to uphold constitution. Will
not make pledge on every issue. Good answer!
Romney took pledge.
Yet he raised fees for the blind, gun-owner, etc. Use to be called
“fee-fee”. He points to the Dem state of MA wanted to raise taxes, and
he said no way. Says he lowered taxes. Wants to eliminate capital gains
tax.
Huckabee’s fair tax proposal will only benefit the two ends
but not in the middle. He says he wants to eliminate penalty on earning
but on consumption including prostitution, etc. I like it.
Paul
says cut both taxes and spending. Wants to get rid of CIA, DHS,etc.
Paul says prior to 9/11 we were spending billions. We need to eliminate
bureaucracy. We need to have intelligent people in intelligence. Says
we should not sacrafic liberty for security we loose both!!! I’m
liking him more and more.
Diner, a poli sci student asks gulian on family values.
Guliani’s own family is being highlighted. Guliani says his family life
is not different from other Americans. He’s running as a human being,
not as a perfect being. He’s running as a leader.
Any issue of his private life does not effect his public performance.
Next question is on Iran. Asking how theywoulddealwith iran.
Paul
says president doesn’t have the power to go to war. Needs to go to
Congress. Should be talking to Iran not looking for a scenerio to
attack them. We don’t have to resort to war everytime. Israel can take
care of themselves.
Tancredo is asked about Israel’s statement
that they won’t wait on Iran. Tancredo says he will look at the people
of Iran. Can’t push a button for war but can’t back down. Everyone is
being politically correct because its getting us killed.
Hunter
doesn’t want to answer a hypothetical (he ought to be defense
secretary) yet he offers some consideration. Can’t allow iran to have
nuclear device and would have to ensure they don’t have weapons grade,
need ground force assessment after a strike.
Huckebee says president ought to uphold constitution and his own conscience.
Brownback is in favor of attack Iran. Need to go after military forces. Great, suit him up.
Guliani
says we need to look at iran differently from cold war prespective as
they are supplying terrorists right now. Need clear position that Iran
cannot go nuclear. Highlights McCain’s and highlights Reagan’s win of
cold war without firing a shot but pointing a thousand missiles at the
soviets.
Romney saying something. Who the hell cares at this point. Guy’s the red-headed step-child of this debate right now.
